Interview with Madonna's Personal Chef, Mayumi Nishimura

Have you ever wondered what celebrities really eat? Maybe you think that they have pretty strict diets and all the help they need to make it happen. And you sit there thinking that if you could afford the support, then you wouldn't need willpower.

Well, in Madonna's case, that's not entirely true. She follows one of the most natural, wholesome, and intuitive diets there is out there: macrobiotics! This is one of the simplest diets I've ever come across, which means it's accessible no matter your status.

I sat down with her personal chef (my idol!) Mayumi Nishimura to chat about:

  • Her life as a macrobiotic celebrity chef
  • What macrobiotics is and how you can get started

Definitions of Words Used in the Interview

Michio Kushi: Michio Kushi is one of the most influential leaders in Macrobiotics. He founded the Kushi Institute for Macrobiotics in Boston, Massachusetts. He has taught so many students over the years that the word of macrobiotics spread around the world. He passed a few years ago. 

Macrobiotics: Macrobiotics is a way of living in harmony with nature that promotes healing and principles we can use to find our healthiest lifestyle. The emphasis is on a whole plant-based local diet but also includes lifestyle techniques to balance out our bodies.

Food Energetics: Food Energetics is the study of how foods affect our bodies based on how it grows in nature. These energies can be categorized as yin and yang. In macrobiotic cooking, the aim is to combine foods in a way that balances out both yin and yang properties.

For example, bananas grow in hot tropical climates (yang), and is said to cool off our bodies (yin). 

In modern day diets, we tend to overlook the importance of eating local foods to acclimate our bodies to our climate, in favor of nutrient density. In other words, if you live in an area where it's snowing and you choose to eat an imported banana which can cool off your body, it might not be the healthiest option regardless of it's nutritional content.

Tempeh: Tempeh is a fermented block of soybeans, often used in vegetarian cooking. 

Seitan: Seitan is gluten made from flour that is often used in vegetarian dishes as it has a meaty texture.
